There is اور There are کا درست استعمال

کچھ جملوں میں اصل زور کسی شے کے وجود پر ہوتا ہے، نہ کہ اس شے پر خود۔ اسی لیے English میں There is اور There are آتے ہیں۔ اردو میں ہم عموماً ایسے موقع پر کہتے ہیں: “ہے” یا “ہیں”، مگر English میں singular اور plural کی صورت الگ رکھنی پڑتی ہے۔

There is تب آتا ہے جب ایک چیز یا ایک شخص کا ذکر ہو:

There is a book on the table.
There is a shop near my house.

There are تب آتا ہے جب ایک سے زیادہ چیزیں یا لوگ ہوں:

There are three books on the table.
There are many people outside.

یہ فرق سادہ لگتا ہے، مگر اکثر غلطی اس جگہ ہوتی ہے جہاں learner لفظوں کی تعداد دیکھنے کے بجائے معنی پر چلا جاتا ہے۔ مثال کے طور پر There is two chairs غلط ہے، کیونکہ chairs plural ہے۔ درست جملہ ہوگا: There are two chairs.

Affirmative form

Affirmative sentence میں structure عام طور پر یہ ہوتا ہے:

There is + singular noun
There are + plural noun

مثلاً:

There is an email from HR.
There are two messages in your inbox.
There is a problem with the file.
There are several problems in the report.

اگر noun countable ہو تو singular/plural پر خاص توجہ دیں۔ اگر uncountable noun ہو تو عموماً There is آتا ہے:

There is water in the bottle.
There is some tea left.

Negative form

Negative بنانے کے لیے not شامل ہوتا ہے:

There is not a chair in the room.
There are not any chairs in the room.

عام بول چال میں There isn't اور There aren't زیادہ natural لگتے ہیں:

There isn't a charger in my bag.
There aren't any seats left.

یہاں any کا استعمال خاص طور پر negative جملوں میں عام ہے۔ اگر آپ some and any کے فرق پر مزید دیکھنا چاہتے ہیں تو Some اور Any میں فرق مدد کرے گا۔

Question form

Question میں verb کو شروع میں لایا جاتا ہے:

Is there a problem?
Are there any problems?
Is there a phone nearby?
Are there enough chairs for everyone?

مختصر جواب بھی یاد رکھیں:

Yes, there is.
No, there isn't.
Yes, there are.
No, there aren't.

یہ وہ جگہ ہے جہاں بہت سے learners غیر ضروری طور پر plural کے ساتھ Is there لکھ دیتے ہیں۔ اگر چیزیں ایک سے زیادہ ہوں تو Are there ہوگا:

Are there any updates?
Are there enough tickets?

Common mistakes

ایک عام غلطی یہ ہے کہ sentence کے آخر والے noun کو نظرانداز کر دیا جائے۔ English میں فیصلہ noun کرتا ہے، نہ کہ sentence کے شروع میں آنے والا لفظ there۔

غلط: There is many students in the class.
درست: There are many students in the class.

دوسری غلطی uncountable nouns کے ساتھ plural verb لگا دینا ہے:

درست: There is furniture in the room.
درست: There is information on the website.

اگر آپ noun countable ہے یا uncountable، اور singular/plural form میں الجھ جاتے ہیں تو A, An اور The کا درست استعمال پڑھنا بھی فائدہ دے سکتا ہے، کیونکہ article اور noun form اکثر ساتھ ساتھ مسئلہ بنتے ہیں۔

ایک چھوٹا سا practical فرق

روزمرہ گفتگو میں There is اور There are صرف grammar کا سوال نہیں ہوتے؛ یہ information دینے کا بہت سیدھا طریقہ ہیں۔ مثلاً کسی office میں آپ کہہ سکتے ہیں:

There is a meeting at 3 p.m.
There are two interviews today.

یا گھر کے بارے میں:

There is no milk in the fridge.
There are clean towels in the bathroom.

اگر آپ کا جملہ future time کے ساتھ ہو تو structure پھر بھی یہی رہتا ہے، صرف meaning context سے واضح ہوتی ہے۔ مثلاً:

There is a class tomorrow.
There are two exams next week.

اگر آپ future expression کی ساخت پر بھی نظر ڈالنا چاہیں تو Future Tense in English کیا ہے؟ useful ہوگا۔

سب سے محفوظ طریقہ یہ ہے: پہلے noun دیکھیں، پھر decide کریں کہ singular ہے یا plural۔ English میں there کا کام صرف یہ بتانا ہے کہ کوئی چیز موجود ہے؛ اصل agreement noun کے ساتھ ہوتا ہے۔
